mastermind behind Ohio State's recent offensive onslaught, has decided to trade in his scarlet and gray for the silver and black of the Las Vegas Raiders. According to sources at ESPN, this isn't just a career pivot; it's a full-blown Vegas act.

Imagine this: one day, Chip's drawing up plays with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker, helping the Buckeyes clinch a national title. The next, he's heading to a city where the only thing more unpredictable than the weather is the outcome of a Raiders game.

The Raiders, now led by charismatic old timer Pete Carroll, have been on a quest for an offensive coordinator who can turn their offense from "meh" to "maestro." Enter Kelly, who, let's be honest, has more offensive schemes than a James Bond villain. His last NFL gig? A brief, forgettable stint with the 49ers, where he left fans wondering if his play-calling was an elaborate prank.

Now, let's talk about the money because, in Vegas, it's all about the Benjamins. Rumors are swirling that Kelly's contract with the Raiders could make him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in NFL history, with whispers of a cool $6 million per year. That's enough cash to buy a small island or at least keep the lights on in Vegas for a night.

But what does this mean for the Raiders? Well, if Kelly can harness the raw talent of Brock Bowers, who's been compared to a young, less grumpy version of Rob Gronkowski, and pair him with Jakobi Meyers, the Raiders might just make the playoffs without requiring divine intervention. However, the quarterback situation remains a cosmic mystery, with the Raiders potentially eyeing a draft pick or praying to the football gods for a veteran to fall from the sky.

Back in Columbus, Ohio State fans are left to ponder life without Kelly's innovative plays. But let's be real, with the Buckeyes' recruiting machine, they'll probably find another genius to push buttons on the offense before you can say "O-H-I-O."

As for Kelly, he's stepping into a world where the stakes are high, the lights are brighter, and the games might end with a halftime show that rivals the Super Bowl. Will he turn the Raiders into an offensive juggernaut? Or will he be just another name on the long list of Raiders' coaching experiments? Only time, and perhaps a few well-placed bets in Vegas, will tell.

So here's to Chip Kelly, may his playbook be as unpredictable as a Vegas night, and may his new journey with the Raiders be less about the gamble and more about the glory. But one thing's for sure, with Kelly at the helm, expect the unexpected – because in Vegas, anything can happen.

College Football’s Luka Doncic is a Los Angeles Laker. The NBA world has officially lost its mind. Mark Cuban probably hasn’t slept in days, Mavs fans are in shambles, and Lakers fans are already declaring a five-peat. Meanwhile, ESPN has effectively turned into the “All Luka, All The Time” network.

Now that we’ve entered this new era of NBA chaos, let’s take a step back and ask the big question: what would be the college football equivalent of this madness? Because a trade of this magnitude doesn’t just shake up a league—it alters reality.

Nick Saban Leaves Alabama… for Auburn

Luka was the Dallas Mavericks. The entire franchise revolved around him, and now he’s gone. That’s the same level of devastation Alabama fans would feel if Nick Saban pulled a midnight exit and took over at Auburn.

Tuscaloosa would descend into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The Bear Bryant statue? Gone. The Paul Finebaum Show? Now a support group for grieving Bama fans. Meanwhile, Auburn fans would instantly forgive every insult they’ve ever hurled at Saban. “We’ve always loved Nick!” they’d say, while commissioning a 40-foot bronze statue of him in Jordan-Hare.

Caleb Williams Transfers to Ohio State Instead of Going Pro

Luka’s trade didn’t just break Dallas—it created a new superpower in Los Angeles. So, imagine if Caleb Williams, instead of heading to the NFL, announced he was coming back for one more year… at Ohio State.

USC fans would have been completely unhinged. Lincoln Riley would have been answering questions about this at press conferences for years. Meanwhile, Buckeye Nation would be intolerable—we’re talking immediate national championship predictions, constant highlight reels, and at least three fan-made statues on campus before he even plays a snap.

And Michigan fans? They’d pretend it didn’t bother them, but deep down, they’d be sweating harder than Harbaugh during an NCAA investigation.

Texas and Oklahoma Merge into One Super-Team

The Lakers didn’t just acquire Luka; they consolidated power. The NBA has officially shifted, and now everyone else is playing catch-up. The only way to match that in college football? Texas and Oklahoma don’t just join the SEC… they merge into one unstoppable force.

The team name? The TexaHoma LongSooners. Their mascot? A combination of Bevo and the Sooner Schooner, fused into one terrifying beast. Their boosters? The wealth of two entire oil industries combined.

SEC fans would riot. Alabama, Georgia, and LSU would form an emergency alliance. The NCAA would look at this and, as usual, do absolutely nothing.

So, What’s the Verdict?

Luka Doncic leaving Dallas is the kind of move that alters the NBA forever. In college football, that means Saban flipping to Auburn, a superstar QB defecting to a rival, or two powerhouse programs combining into one.

One thing’s for sure—sports will never be the same. And somewhere, Paul Finebaum is yelling into a microphone about it.

CFP Final: Buckeyes Favored, but Irish Eyes Are fans—on January 20, 2025, Ohio State and Notre Dame are squaring off in Atlanta for the College Football Playoff National Championship. That’s right: the Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish, battling it out in the same stadium where Chick-fil-A is king. The stakes? Immortality—or at least a slightly fancier trophy than your fantasy football league’s.

Vegas Says Buckeyes, Notre Dame Says “Hold My Beer”

The oddsmakers have Ohio State as an 8.5-point favorite, which might as well be a polite way of saying, “Notre Dame, thanks for playing.” But hold on—this isn’t your dad’s Notre Dame team. These Irish have rattled off 13 straight wins, including a perfect record against ranked opponents. They’re on a heater so hot, they could melt the Golden Dome.

Ohio State fans, meanwhile, are already penciling this game in as another trophy for their overcrowded shelf. But remember, Notre Dame doesn’t come quietly. They come in swinging, praying, and probably with a stash of green Gatorade blessed by their team chaplain.

Quarterbacks: Nerd vs. Ninja

Will Howard, Ohio State’s quarterback, is your classic pocket passer, boasting a precision arm, 33 touchdowns, and a knack for making defenders look lost in the secondary. Across the field, Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard is basically a football-playing Swiss Army knife—he throws, runs, jukes, and probably knows how to set up a camping tent. With 19 passing TDs and 16 rushing ones, Leonard isn’t just playing football; he’s auditioning for the lead in the next Marvel movie.

Injury Woes: Notre Dame Goes MacGyver

Notre Dame’s offensive line has been held together by duct tape, sheer willpower, and a few Hail Marys. Left tackle Anthonie Knapp is out, but in a plot twist, Charles Jagusah—initially pegged as a starter—is stepping back into action. It’s like finding out your backup wedding cake is actually gourmet; not ideal, but you’ll take it.

Defense: The Wall vs. The Wounded

Ohio State’s defense has been a wrecking crew, smothering opponents like barbecue sauce on ribs. Tennessee? Crushed. Oregon? Obliterated. Texas? Deep in the heart of humiliation. Meanwhile, Notre Dame’s defense, despite injuries, keeps proving they can duct-tape their way to greatness. Even after losing star corner Benjamin Morrison, the Irish secondary has held strong. You’d think they’d be folding, but nope—they’re the IKEA furniture of football: annoying to assemble but shockingly sturdy.

Prediction: Chaos Will Reign

While Vegas leans Buckeyes, the rest of us know college football doesn’t follow logic. Notre Dame’s underdog story is dripping with so much movie potential that Disney is already drafting the script. Ohio State fans are confident, but if the Irish pull this off, we might need to rename the “Luck of the Irish” to “Absolute Chaos of the Irish.”

Final Thoughts: Expect the Unexpected

This game has it all—powerhouses clashing, quarterbacks doing quarterback things, and defenses turning every snap into a war zone. Will the Buckeyes prove Vegas right, or will Notre Dame pull off the kind of miracle that only happens on late-night TV infomercials? Either way, grab your popcorn, your rosary, or your Buckeye nuts—it’s going to be one for the ages.

Speaking of: Quarterbacks named Texas” has been more just a saying in the SEC over the last two weeks. Two weeks ago, it showcased the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs knocking out the top ranked Texas Longhorns and then last week it was Texas A&M’s turn. The Aggies faced the LSU Tigers under the lights and defeated the No. 8 team in the nation 38 to 23. Texas A&M improved to 7-1 and a perfect 5-0 conference record. It is the best conference start by the Aggies since joining the SEC in 2012. The Aggies used two quarterbacks in the game. One of them, Marcel Reed passed just twice, but ran the ball nine times with three of them going for scores. He was the first Texas A&M quarterback with three rushing touchdowns in a game since Trevor Knight in 2016.

Speaking of people whose last name is Knight…

Ted Knight was a comedic actor whose is known for such roles in playing the judge in Caddyshack as well as his time on television playing Ted Baxter in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and playing Henry Rush in Too Close for Comfort.

Speaking of rush…

One player who had a lot of success rushing the ball last week was Auburn’s Jarquez Hunter. Hunter ran the ball 23 times for 278 yards. It was the most rush yards in a game by any FBS player this season. It was the fourth most rush yards in a game in Auburn history and the most since Tre Mason in the 2013 SEC Championship against Missouri when he had 304. For the season, Mason had 23 touchdown rushes to set a school record that season. He broke the record once held by former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton who had 20.

Speaking of quarterbacks named Cam…

Cam Ward and the Miami Hurricanes took care of business against their in-state rival from Tallahassee. However, Ward had some unusual stats… for him, at least. He had 208 yards passing which was the first time that he did not throw for 300 or more this season. He also had zero touchdowns passes for the first time as well. He continued his strange game early in the fourth quarter when the quarterback caught a touchdown pass on a trick play. Miami would defeat Florida State 36 to 14. The Hurricanes improved to 8-0 while the Seminoles fell to 1-7. FSU has lost seven of its first eight games for the first time since 1974 (The ‘Noles only win that season was against Miami). The Seminoles head coach was Dan Mudra. Mudra lasted just two seasons in Tallahassee before being replaced by Bobby Bowden.

Speaking of Bobby Bowden…

The hall of fame head coach did not have a great start with Florida State in 1976. Bobby Bowden lost his first three games with Florida State before winning the fourth. His opponent was Kansas State.

Speaking of Kansas State…

Kansas State is 7-1 this season for the first time since 2014. Last week, the Wildcats defeated the Jayhawks in the Sunflower Showdown. Chris Tennant connected from 52 yards with under two minutes to play to give Kansas State the 29-27 win over Kansas. Chris Klieman is in his sixth season as the Wildcats head coach. He has a 46-25 record in his current spot. Prior to this job, he was the head coach of North Dakota State. He led the Bison to a 69-6 record and four FCS Championships.

Each of those four FCS Championships were played in the state of Texas. Also, Klieman’s first bowl win with Kansas State was in 2021. That game was also played in the state of Texas and when they won the 2022 Big XII Championship, it too was played in the state of Texas.

Knute Rockne, Bob Neyland, Kirby Smart, and...Pink Floyd?

A new "Speaking Of" article from HM Sports It was the third time that Kiby Smart has defeated a number one team as the Bulldogs head coach (Georgia only had one win against a number one team prior). It was also Smart’s 100th career win. It took him 117 games to reach that total which is tied for the fifth quickest in major college football history. Also with 117 were Chris Petersen and the legend, Knute Rockne.

Speaking of Knute Rockne…

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. The Galloping Ghost dominated college football in the 1920s. In 1924, he and Illinois defeated Michigan 39 to 14. The icon was part of six touchdown scores (one pass, four rush and one kickoff return) in that matchup.

Last Saturday, Illinois defeated Michigan 21 to 7, exactly 100 years and one day after the Illini did its damage. This time it was Illinois quarter Luke Altmyer was one of the heroes. Altmyer is just the third Big Ten quarterback since 2000 to have 15 or more TD passes and just one interception through seven games (JT Barrett and Justin Fields are the others). The 15 TD passes this season for Altmyer is tied for the Big Ten lead.

Speaking of 15 TD passes…

Illinois’ Saturday opponent is the new number one team in the land, the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks are led by their own quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who along with Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke, are the others with 15 TD passes in the Big Ten. Gabriel also has 140 TD passes in his career. He is third all-time in FBS history. The all-time leader is former Houston quarterback, Case Keenum who ended his career with 155. Keenum was born on February 17, 1988.

Speaking of being born on February 17th …

Also, born on February 17th , but this time in 1892, was the General, Bob Neyland. The legendary Tennessee head coach finished with a 173-31-10 record. This past week, the stadium which is named after him in Knoxville was home to an incredible game as the Volunteers defeated the Crimson Tide of Alabama 24 to 17. The Vols have won two of the last three games against their long-time rival after losing 15 in a row in the series. One of the notable traditions in this series is for the coaches, players and fans of the winning team to light up a victory cigar after the game.

Speaking of “Have a Cigar”…

“Have a Cigar” was one of the most popular songs off of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here album from 1975. It was the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s ninth studio album. Their first studio album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn came out in 1967.

Speaking of 1967…

1967 is the only other season prior to this season in which Indiana started the season with a 7-0 record (now 8-0). The Hoosiers have outscored their opponent 341 to 96 this season. The Indiana men’s basketball team started last season with a 7-1 record, but it started the season prior perfect at 7-0. While football is king right now, the Hoosiers are more known for college basketball as they have won five NCAA titles.

Speaking of basketball schools…

Kansas has four NCAA Titles in men’s basketball and its football team just snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating Houston last week 42 to 14. One of the stars of the game was Cobee Bryant (yes, his parents named him after the basketball great with a different spelling). The football player Cobee Bryant had three interceptions in the game. The three tied a school record which hasn’t been done by a Jayhawk since Bill Crank did it in 1958. Bryant is tied for second with Aqib Talib in school history with 13 career interceptions.

Speaking of 13 career interceptions…

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had 13 interceptions as a player for the Bulldogs from 1995 to 1998.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

October is here, folks! That magical time when pumpkin spice infiltrates everything from lattes to… defensive playbooks? (We’re looking at you, Iowa.) College football is halfway through its season, and things are starting to heat up. Yep, conference play is ramping up, and the question on everyone’s mind is: Will your team crumble under pressure like a soggy nacho at a tailgate party, or will they rise like a phoenix from the ashes of their earlier, horrifically embarrassing losses? Either way, it’s going to be fun.

We’ve got nine of the top 10 teams in action this weekend, and it’s all about conference battles. But, of course, only one matchup includes ranked teams because who needs excitement when we can have lopsided chaos? Let’s dive into Week 6 and break down why this Saturday is going to be as unpredictable as a fumble recovery on a rainy day.

Navy at Air Force (Noon | CBS)

Ah, Navy vs. Air Force—a rivalry as old as time, or at least as old as the last time you forgot the Army was also a part of this whole “Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy” thing. Navy’s sitting pretty at 4-0, while Air Force, bless their hearts, is doing their best to not look like a JV high school team.

Air Force hasn’t exactly taken flight this season. They’ve been grounded, literally. Their offense could use more lift, and by lift, we mean they need to stop scoring fewer points than your aunt’s flag football team. They’ve lost every game against FBS opponents by at least two possessions. Two. If this were golf, they’d be winning—sadly, this is football.

Meanwhile, Navy’s been scoring 46 points per game. 46! That’s more points than you rack up on Madden when you’re playing on rookie mode. The Midshipmen should cruise through this one, but it’s football, and Air Force might get one or two lucky breaks. Who knows? Maybe they’ll even score in the double digits! Woo! Aim high, right? Pick: Navy -9.5

Missouri at Texas A&M (Noon | ABC)

Missouri is 4-0! Wow, incredible! Oh, wait, all those wins came at home, against teams like Vanderbilt and Boston College. It’s like celebrating because you beat a bunch of 6-year-olds at basketball. This Saturday, they step out of their comfort zone, leaving the friendly confines of their home turf to face Texas A&M in what is guaranteed to be… well, a reality check.

Texas A&M, fresh off their habit of bruising egos at Kyle Field, has more talent than a 90’s boy band reunion tour. These Aggies will look to ruin Missouri’s undefeated record the way an overzealous dad ruins a Little League game: ruthlessly and without apology. Marcel Reed, A&M’s quarterback, will make life difficult for Missouri’s defense, kind of like trying to find a parking spot at the mall on Black Friday.

Mizzou will try, bless their hearts, but this feels like one of those games where they’re going to be searching for answers and leaving with participation trophies. Pick: Texas A&M -2.5

Iowa at Ohio State (3:30 p.m. | CBS)

Now, Iowa comes in with a reputation. No, not the fun kind—like being the cool kid who throws the best parties. Iowa’s reputation is more like the kid who reminds the teacher they forgot to assign homework. They’re known for mucking up games, turning them into defensive slogs where scoring is more of a suggestion than an actual goal. They play ugly. They play slow. It’s football, but it’s football that makes you question your life choices for watching.

Meanwhile, Ohio State’s been cruising. They haven’t even opened up the full playbook yet, as if they’ve been saving their best stuff for later. This feels like one of those games where Ohio State might come out sluggish but eventually turn it on and remind us all why they’re ranked third in the nation. Iowa might stick around for a bit, but eventually, the Buckeyes will hit that gear and blow the doors off this one like a firecracker in a mailbox. Pick: Ohio State -19.5

Auburn at Georgia (3:30 p.m. | ABC)

Auburn’s season has been rougher than a sandpaper pillowcase. They’ve dropped two straight at home and are now being sent on a road trip to face a Georgia team that’s angry. Not just regular angry—angry like someone took the last slice of pizza angry. Georgia had their hearts broken last week after almost pulling off a ridiculous comeback against Alabama, but now they’re back at home, and you know what that means: destruction.

The Bulldogs are going to open up on Auburn the way a college kid opens a care package from home—quickly and without mercy. If Georgia plays with the same fire they showed in the second half against Alabama, this could get ugly. Auburn’s goal? Survive. Georgia’s goal? Cover that 24.5-point spread and then some. Pick: Georgia -24.5

Tennessee at Arkansas (7:30 p.m. | ABC)

Tennessee is like that guy at the gym who’s clearly strong but refuses to show off, quietly squatting a ton while everyone else is grunting and flexing in front of the mirror. The Vols held back last week against Oklahoma, opting to grind the game out on the ground rather than air it out, because why not? But now, they face Arkansas—a team that has the strange combination of being both formidable and wildly reckless, like a toddler with a paint set.

Arkansas has a mobile quarterback and a running game that’s about as subtle as a freight train. The problem? They also turn the ball over more than a fidgety chef flipping pancakes. Tennessee’s defense thrives on this kind of chaos, and while Arkansas might break a few big plays, they’ll ultimately make too many mistakes to stay in this one for long. Pick: Arkansas +13.5

So, there you have it—Week 6 in all its chaotic, unpredictable glory. It’s going to be a rollercoaster of emotions, like watching your fantasy team implode, only this time it’s happening to real players and real teams. Enjoy the ride!

Honorable Mention Sports is a fan-supported publication. The Houston Cougars fell to 1-4 on the season and were shut out for the second straight week. First it was against Cincinnati and then last week it was to Iowa State. It was the first time that Houston was shut out two weeks in a row since 1994.

There is no problem is Provo. Those Cougars defeated Baylor last week and improved to 5-0 on the season for the eighth time in school history and the third time under Kalani Sitake. The first touchdown last week was a touchdown reception to running back Miles Davis. It was Davis’ first touchdown of any since 2020.

Speaking of Miles Davis…

The more well-known Miles Davis is the cool trumpet player that delighted audiences for over six decades. In 2006, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sadly, last Sunday was the 33rd anniversary of his death. He passed away in 1991 in Santa Monica, California.

Speaking of the Santa Monica, California…

USC’s quarterback Miller Moss was born in Santa Monica. He had three touchdown passes and a touchdown rush in last week’s comeback win against Wisconsin. The Badgers allowed Jalen Milroe to do the same feat in their prior game two weeks earlier (before that Wisconsin did not allow a quarterback to have three or more touchdown passes and one or more touchdown runs in the same game in the previous 116 games). USC’s current offensive coordinator is Josh Henson. Henson has had many coaching jobs around the college circuit including one as the tight ends coach at LSU in 2007 when they won the National Championship.

Speaking of LSU and 2007…

This one is a stretch, but this past week Kentucky defeated Ole Miss. The Rebels came in ranked sixth in the nation. This was the first time that Kentucky has defeated a top six team since defeating LSU in 2007 in three overtimes. In the game last Saturday, the winning score came on a fumble recovery in the endzone by tight end Josh Kattus. Kattus was the man on the spot when quarterback Gavin Wimsatt fumbled the ball inside around the two-yard line. Wimsatt has 24 rush attempts this season compared to just ten pass attempts. He and Kentucky’s other quarterback Brock Vandagriff have only four touchdown passes combined.

Speaking of four touchdown passes…

Kentucky ranks tied for 109th in the FBS with those four touchdown passes. Another team with four is Army. Army is also ranked tied for fifth in the FBS with 16 touchdown rushes. Also, tied for fifth is Navy. Army and Navy have both started the 2024 season with a record of 4-0. The last time both Army and Navy started the season 4-0 was in 1945. That season, Army won the National Championship and Navy finished second in the polls.

Speaking of 1945 rankings…

After Army and Navy, the team that finished third that season in the AP poll was you guessed it, Alabama.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. The season feels like it started just yesterday, and yet here we are, already knee-deep in September chaos. With bad weather creeping in thanks to Hurricane Helene, some games will see more waterlogged fans than cheerleaders with pom-poms. But let’s not forget the football – there’s plenty of that, and we’re about to dive into a weekend packed with action, upsets, and heartbreak.

Friday, Sept. 27:

Virginia Tech vs. Miami
Once upon a time, this game mattered for the ACC standings. Now? Miami's just trying to claw its way up while Virginia Tech looks lost like your roommate searching for their keys after a night out. Miami’s a 17-point favorite, which says more about the Hokies' season than the Hurricanes’ potential ACC dominance.

Washington vs. Rutgers
Yes, you read that right. Rutgers – the same Rutgers you probably forgot existed – is favored against Washington. The Scarlet Knights have a top-10 pass defense this season, but the catch? They haven’t faced a decent offense yet. Washington might actually make Rutgers remember why it's historically been a punchline. Or Rutgers keeps doing... whatever Rutgers is doing.

Saturday, Sept. 28:

Kentucky vs. Ole Miss
Ole Miss has been feasting on cupcakes for a month, and now they’re facing their first real challenge in Kentucky. Lane Kiffin’s squad is favored by 17.5 points, which sounds like a lot until you remember they’ve covered bigger spreads without breaking a sweat. Quarterback Jaxson Dart is eyeing the Heisman, and the Rebels are here to steamroll the Wildcats.

Maryland vs. Indiana
Indiana, now made up of spare parts from James Madison and a hodgepodge of Group of Five talent, is off to a 4-0 start. Will the fairytale continue? The Hoosiers are touchdown favorites against Maryland, but with Helene bringing the rain, this one could be a sloppy mess. Indiana might get a reality check or… continue their surprising rise to football relevance.

BYU vs. Baylor
Last week, BYU somehow pulled off a 38-6 win despite being outgained by 100 yards. Baylor, meanwhile, found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. These teams are both coming off wacky results, and Baylor’s narrow home favorite status feels like a coin flip. Will Baylor stop the bleeding, or will BYU keep finding new and inventive ways to defy logic?

Oklahoma State vs. Kansas State
Ah, the Big 12, where inconsistency reigns supreme. Both Oklahoma State and Kansas State were supposed to challenge for the conference title. Now, one of these teams will be 0-2 in conference play, and the mood in the locker room will not be pretty. Get ready for some desperation football!

Western Kentucky vs. Boston College
Boston College has been on a rollercoaster, facing tough teams and coming off an emotional win last week. Western Kentucky, meanwhile, has new life thanks to quarterback Caden Veltkamp. If BC comes out sleepy, this could be the upset special of the week. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Colorado vs. UCF
Colorado isn’t exactly known for stopping the run, and UCF’s rushing attack is ranked No. 7 in the country. UCF’s pass defense is also shaky, which plays right into Colorado’s strength. So what’s the result when you have one team that can’t stop the run and another that can’t stop the pass? Probably lots of points and an annoyed defensive coordinator or two.

Fresno State vs. UNLV
UNLV’s quarterback Matt Sluka has officially checked out for the season, and the betting line swung wildly before settling in favor of UNLV. Sluka was electric but erratic, so maybe the Rebels are better off without him? Either way, Fresno State will look to take advantage of the chaos, while UNLV is left wondering if they’ve just lost their season or dodged a bullet.

Oklahoma vs. Auburn
The matchup with more existential dread than a philosophy student at 2 a.m. Oklahoma was demolished by Tennessee last week and now turns to freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. at quarterback. Auburn’s quarterback situation is even messier, with Hugh Freeze throwing both Payton Thorne and Hank Brown under the bus. It’s a disaster waiting to happen, so naturally, this game is a must-watch.

Georgia vs. Alabama
Here’s the main event: Georgia vs. Alabama, with the Tide as home underdogs for the first time since 2007. Georgia’s quarterback Carson Beck has been out of sync, and Alabama’s defense has been rock-solid, especially against slot receivers. Nick Saban’s got his underdog story brewing, and the Bulldogs are primed for a tough fight. Buckle up, because this one’s going to be a slugfest.

Illinois vs. Penn State
Illinois shocked Nebraska in overtime last week, and now they’re heading to Happy Valley to try and do it again against Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 17.5-point favorites, but apparently, 91% of bettors think Illinois can at least keep it close. Maybe they’ve got a point – or maybe people just really like betting against Penn State.

Ohio State vs. Michigan State
NBC, in its infinite wisdom, has shoved Ohio State behind a Peacock paywall. But let’s be honest – most of us aren’t tuning in to watch the Buckeyes play a glorified practice session. They’re 23.5-point favorites on the road, and we’re all waiting for them to flex their muscles and show us the dominant performance we know is coming. Maybe this is the week?

Florida State vs. SMU
Remember when this game was going to be great? Yeah, me neither. The Mustangs are favored by almost a touchdown, and neither team’s offense has lived up to preseason hype. If you’re a fan of defensive struggles and low-scoring affairs, this might be the underdog game of the week for you.

Washington State vs. Boise State
Late-night, West Coast, high-scoring chaos. The total’s set at 64.5, and both teams are bringing explosive offenses to the party. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty has been shredding defenses all season, and Washington State is right there with them. If you love points, caffeine, and staying up past midnight, this is your game.

Oregon vs. UCLA
“Big Ten After Dark” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, but here we are. Oregon’s favored by three touchdowns, and while this game will likely be a blowout, the familiarity of a lopsided Pac-12 game past midnight will bring some comfort.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. The Buffaloes trailed the Baylor Bears by seven points in the closing seconds of the game. Shedeur Sanders heaved the football towards the endzone from his own side the field and the ball was dropped by the receiver. The very next play Sanders would let it fly once again and this time LaJohntay Wester caught the ball inches from hitting the ground for the score. The Buffs would eventually win in overtime 38 to 31. It was the first win for Colorado in the Big 12 since 2010. They were members of the Pac-12 since.

Speaking of a Colorado hail mary…

On a game played thirty years ago this Tuesday between Colorado at Michigan, the Buffaloes connected on a hail mary from Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook (Wester-Westbrook… very close) and Colorado would win 27 to 26 in the “Miracle in Michigan”. Colorado’s wide receiver coach in that game was future head coach and broadcaster Rick Neuheisel. Neuheisel is part of CBS Sports’ College Football Today pregame show and was actually there at last week’s USC at Michigan game from Ann Arbor. It was the Trojans first ever game in the Big Ten and they would lead late in the game. The Wolverines had a 3rd and 1 situation at their own 20-yard line. Kalel Mullings went off right tackle and ran for 63 yards to set up a go-ahead 1-yard Mullings touchdown with under a minute left and Michigan won 27 to 24. On a side-note, Wolverine quarterback Alex Orji had just 32 yards passing in the game. It was the lowest pass yards by Michigan in a win since Halloween of 1987 against Northwestern (3 yards).

This week Michigan faces Minnesota in a battle of the Little Brown Jug. That trophy game has been in existence since 1903 (the rivalry is older than that). The Wolverines have a large lead in the series and have won the last four head-to-head. This week’s game is in Michigan where the last time the Golden Gophers won in the series there was in 2014. The last time Minnesota won this rivalry at home was in 1977. Minnesota’s head coach P.J. Fleck was not even born yet (born in 1980).

Speaking of the state of Minnesota…

40 years ago this week, Minnesota native and legend Prince had the number one song in the country with Let’s Go Crazy.

Speaking of pop icons from years ago…

Did you know that also in the year 1984, Michael Jackson and his brothers played a concert at Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium? The three-day affair drew a combined 148,407 in attendance. This past week superstar Morgan Wallen surpassed that total and had 156,161 attend his two shows at the same stadium. Obviously, last week’s matchup between the Volunteers and the Sooners was played in Norman instead of in Knoxville. The Vols won 25 to 15. It was the second fewest point-total by Oklahoma in the Brent Venables era. Oklahoma had two quarterbacks throw the ball in last Saturday’s game. Their first names were ironically, Michael (Hawkins, Jr) and Jackson (Arnold).

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel was the Sooners quarterback in 2000 and was the Heisman runner-up to FSU’s Chris Weinke. Oklahoma defeated Florida State that season in the 2001 Orange Bowl and won the National Championship.

Speaking of ACC teams that lost…

North Carolina lost to James Madison last week 70 to 50. James Madison’s team name is the Dukes, but that doesn’t mean the score was supposed to resemble North Carolina or Duke basketball (or James Madison for that matter). The 70 points is the second most points allowed by a team led by hall of fame head coach Mack Brown. The most was 73 when Brown’s Tulane squad lost to Florida State 73 to 14. That Seminole team had All-American Deion Sanders. The now Colorado head coach had a punt return for a touchdown in that game against the Green Wave.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. For!

It’s the official kickoff to the Big Ten season, and Coach Matt Rhule is as fired up as a Husker fan on game day. “Let the games begin, for real,” he says, as No. 22 Nebraska faces No. 24 Illinois in a Friday night showdown. The Cornhuskers, enjoying their best start since 2016, are eager to prove that their preseason wins weren’t just a warm-up act. But Illinois, on its own historic run, is ready to crash the party. This game is set to break a lot of streaks—hopefully not any hearts!

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola, the nation’s top true freshman passer, is set to show why he's more than just hype. Illinois’ Luke Altmyer, on the other hand, is practically a gazelle in cleats, darting down the field with his quick feet. He’s got the moves, but Raiola’s arm is a cannon waiting to fire. It’s brains vs. brawn, legs vs. laser passes—popcorn-worthy stuff!

Fun Facts to Impress Your Friends: Did You Know?

Nebraska is on track to celebrate its 400th consecutive sellout, an NCAA record that's more impressive than your uncle’s collection of Husker memorabilia. And speaking of streaks, Illinois is looking to make their best start since 2011. So, whether you’re cheering for the Huskers or the Illini, this game promises to be a barnburner. Just make sure your snack supply is as strong as the Husker defense—this one’s going down to the wire!

Saturday:

#11 USC @ #18 Michigan

Showdown to Watch:

It’s a classic Midwest vs. West Coast showdown as the No. 11 USC Trojans take their Hollywood swagger to Ann Arbor to face the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines in their first Big Ten clash. For USC, it’s all about proving they can handle the pressure of playing in the Big House, one of the most intimidating stadiums in college football. Michigan, still licking its wounds after being thrashed by Texas, is eager to remind everyone why they were last year’s champs. Will USC keep their hot streak alive, or will Michigan's home-field magic spark an upset?

Key Players:

For the Wolverines, it’s all eyes on new starting QB Alex Orji. His name might be easy to joke about, but his dual-threat abilities are no laughing matter. After a lackluster start to the season, Orji’s ability to improvise might be just what Michigan needs to keep the Trojans guessing. Meanwhile, USC’s offense is led by QB Caleb Williams, whose arm is so good it should come with a warning label. If Michigan’s defense doesn’t step up, he’ll be dropping dimes all day.

Fun Facts to Impress Your Friends:

Michigan’s Big House is the largest stadium in the U.S., seating over 107,000 fans. That’s a lot of maize and blue!

USC has never played a Big Ten team as a conference opponent—until now. Welcome to the club, Trojans!

Alex Orji has more 10-yard rushes this season (4) than USC’s entire starting backfield. He’s the Wolverine’s secret weapon.

#12 UTAH @ #14 Ok. State

Showdown to Watch: Utes vs. Cowboys

Buckle up, folks! The Utah Utes are charging into Boone Pickens Stadium to face off against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday, Sept. 21. It’s not just any game—this is the Big 12 debut for Utah, and they’re ready to show they mean business. With both teams eyeing a shot at conference supremacy, this matchup has more at stake than a cowboy hat at a square dance.

Key Players: The Big Guns

Utah’s defense is scarier than a bull in a china shop, and linebacker Lander Barton is the sheriff in town. He’ll be gunning for Oklahoma State’s running back Ollie Gordon, who’s itching to break loose after a slow start. On the flip side, keep your eyes on Cowboys quarterback Alan Bowman, who’s thrown for nearly a thousand yards in just three games. If he connects with his wide receivers, Brennan Presley and De’Zhaun Stribling, the Utes’ secondary might be in for a wild ride.

Fun Facts to Impress Your Friends

Top-15 Streak: Utah has been ranked in the top 15 in the AP poll 67 times since 2005. That’s more than most people change their car’s oil.

Coaching Legend: Utah’s Kyle Whittingham is the longest-tenured coach in the Big 12 and second in all of FBS. He’s been with the Utes since “Friends” was still on air!

Defensive Dominance: Utah is leading the Big 12 in sacks, averaging 3.33 per game. They’re bringing the heat like a summer day in Oklahoma!

#6 Tennessee @ #15 Oklahoma

Get ready for a clash of titans as Oklahoma crashes the SEC party! It’s like the new kid in class taking on the teacher’s pet. This matchup brings some spicy backstory: Tennessee coach Josh Heupel is facing off against his alma mater, where he quarterbacked the Sooners to a national title in 2000. To add more drama, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was there too—calling the shots on defense. Talk about a family reunion with a twist!

The Showdown to Watch: Vols D vs. Sooners O-Line

Tennessee’s defense is tighter than a jar of pickles. They haven’t allowed an offensive touchdown in 16 quarters. That’s four games of offensive shutouts! The last time they were this stingy was when color TV was still a novelty. Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s run game has been just okay. With 4.34 yards per carry, they’re basically cruising in the slow lane. If they can’t get it together, it’s going to be a long day for Sooners fans.

Players to Keep an Eye On

For Tennessee, it’s all about Nico Iamaleava. This 6-foot-6 QB is as cool as a cucumber and undefeated as a starter. For Oklahoma, freshman RB Taylor Tatum is making a name for himself with two touchdowns last week. Can he break through Tennessee’s ironclad defense? Good luck, kid!

Fast Facts to Impress Your Friends

Tennessee’s outscoring opponents 191-13 this season—biggest SEC point differential ever through three games! Plus, they’ve hit 50 points in each game like it’s 1913 again. Buckle up, folks. This one’s gonna be a ride!

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. href="https://unsplash.com">Unsplash

Once upon a time in Norman, Oklahoma, in a world where punting wasn’t as cool as punt returns, Bob Stoops, head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, made a phone call that would change the course of history. No, he wasn’t calling for a pizza, although after the Sooners’ 40-6 drubbing by Clemson in the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl, he might have needed comfort food. Instead, Stoops reached out to longtime assistant Cale Gundy with an invitation to Bison Witches, a popular sandwich joint in downtown Norman. There, over deli meats and dismay, Stoops delivered the news: he was firing offensive coordinator and Sooner royalty, Josh Heupel.

The news was like a fumble at the goal line – shocking, painful, and oddly poetic. The Sooners had just wrapped up their worst season under Stoops, complete with upsets from TCU and Kansas State, a Baylor beatdown, and Oklahoma State’s Tyreek Hill running circles around their special teams to secure a Bedlam victory. But the final nail in the coffin was Clemson’s brutal takedown, led by then-defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who was sharpening his Tiger claws for future head coaching roles.

"Bob had to make a change," Gundy recalls, as if recounting a bad breakup. “It wasn’t easy, but it had to be done.” Firing Heupel wasn’t just cutting a colleague loose – it was firing the guy who literally quarterbacked OU to its last national championship in 2000. OU hadn’t even sniffed a national title since, making Heupel a living legend on campus. But legends, apparently, are not immune to coaching carousels.

From Heisman Hopeful to Heave-Ho

Josh Heupel wasn’t just a former star quarterback. He was the man who orchestrated the Sooners’ offensive juggernaut in the 2000s, mentoring two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks, Jason White and Sam Bradford. By the time he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2011, Heupel was the golden boy of the OU program. But by 2014, the offense had lost its spark, and Stoops, in what he later called the "worst day" of his coaching career, decided it was time for a change. Goodbye Heupel, hello East Carolina’s Lincoln Riley.

To say the firing hurt would be like saying the sun is a little warm. But if Heupel was bitter, he didn't show it. “Tremendously grateful” was how he described his time at OU when asked about the situation years later. “I wouldn’t be here without those experiences.” And by "here," he means leading Tennessee, currently a top-ten team, back into national prominence.

Heupel’s football journey is like a redemption arc from a Hollywood sports movie. Saturday, he returns to the stadium where he became a legend, only this time, he’s wearing orange and white instead of crimson and cream, as his Tennessee Volunteers take on the Sooners in their first SEC conference matchup. Cue the dramatic music.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. Enter Heupel, a little-known JUCO transfer from Utah’s Snow College.

Heupel wasn’t the prototypical quarterback. No rocket arm, no ability to evade defenders like Barry Sanders. But what he could do was throw accurately and make smart decisions – two minor details that happen to be important in football. "Josh was a QB rat," Gundy says. "He lived and breathed football, which made him the perfect fit for Leach’s system." Heupel’s work ethic was more meticulous than a clockmaker's, and it paid off big time.

By the time 2000 rolled around, Heupel wasn’t just leading the Sooners – he was inspiring them. Before their first practice, Heupel delivered a speech that has since reached mythical proportions. “Why not us?” he told his teammates, daring them to dream big. Gundy, standing at the back of the room, nearly choked on his coffee when Heupel uttered the words "national championship." But Heupel wasn’t delusional – he was determined.

And in the end, Heupel's vision came true. The Sooners ripped through their 2000 season, including a three-week stretch dubbed "Red October" in which they annihilated Texas, beat second-ranked Kansas State, and knocked off No. 1 Nebraska. Their reward? A trip to the Orange Bowl, where they faced heavily favored Florida State for the national title. Heupel didn't win the Heisman that year – Chris Weinke of Florida State took that – but OU got the last laugh with a 13-2 victory, making them national champions and cementing Heupel's place in Sooner lore.

The Return of the King (But with a Twist)

Fast forward to 2024. After years bouncing around coaching jobs – including a stop as offensive coordinator at Missouri and head coach at UCF – Heupel is back in Norman. Only this time, he's coaching the enemy. Heupel’s Tennessee Volunteers are hot, with a shiny No. 6 ranking, and the matchup against his alma mater has all the makings of a Shakespearean drama. Will the hometown hero receive a warm welcome, or will the Sooner faithful greet him with the frosty chill reserved for exes who left without saying goodbye?

For Heupel, it’s likely to be a bittersweet moment. He’s already downplayed the emotional weight of the game, but anyone who’s seen a rom-com knows that deep down, he’s got to be feeling something. After all, it was Oklahoma that gave him his start, both as a player and a coach. And sure, they fired him. But that just gave him the chance to prove himself elsewhere, leading Tennessee to new heights in the process.

In the words of Heisman-winning former Sooner Jason White, “We lost a great coach with unlimited potential.” But the truth is, Heupel didn’t lose anything. He gained a fresh start, a new team, and a chance to make his mark in the SEC. And now, after a decade of twists and turns, he’s back where it all began.

As Heupel steps onto the field Saturday, it’s more than just a game. It’s a reunion, a clash of past and present, and a testament to the idea that sometimes, you need to lose everything to find out what you’re really made of. Oklahoma may have fired Heupel, but they couldn’t extinguish his fire. Now, with Tennessee at his back, Heupel's ready to show the Sooners just how far he’s come.

And in case you were wondering – yes, he’s still aiming for a championship. Only this time, it’s in orange.

Homage of the Week: The Florida Gator Debacle

Another way of conveying an honorable mention is an homage. The latest episode in this ongoing series is the burning question: Will Lane Kiffin, the flamboyant head coach of Ole Miss, trade in his red and blue Rebels for the swampy green of the Florida Gators? Grab your popcorn, folks, because this storyline is about to get even juicier.

Let’s start with Lane Kiffin, the man of the hour. Kiffin’s coaching career is like a rollercoaster designed by a thrill-seeking five-year-old. From his early days as a hotshot offensive coordinator to his head coaching stints at USC and Tennessee, Kiffin has managed to stay in the limelight—sometimes for the right reasons, sometimes for the wrong ones. Currently, he's at Ole Miss, where he’s done a commendable job of turning the Rebels into a competitive force. But let’s face it, Kiffin’s real talent lies in stirring up speculation.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Enter Florida, a program with a rich history of football greatness and, more importantly, a track record of changing coaches like most people change socks. The Gators, hungry for success after a few years of less-than-stellar performances, might be eyeing Kiffin like a kid eyeing the last slice of pizza at a party.

So why would Kiffin even consider leaving Ole Miss for Florida? Let’s weigh the pros and cons, shall we?

Pros:

1. Swampy Sunshine:

Florida’s weather is a delightful contrast to Mississippi’s humidity. Plus, where else can you experience the joys of gator wrestling and alligator-themed decorations in the same day?

2. Recruiting Bonanza:

Florida is a recruiting goldmine. The Gators have a knack for attracting top talent from the Sunshine State, and Kiffin knows that having the best players can make all the difference. Imagine the recruiting pitch: “Come play for me and you might actually get to wrestle a gator on game day!”

3. Vacuum of Expectations:

In Florida, Kiffin would be following a tradition of high expectations. No one would be surprised if he came in and turned the Gators into an immediate contender. It’s like moving from a small-town diner to a five-star restaurant where the chef is expected to cook gourmet meals on demand.

Cons:

1. Swamp Gas and Swamp Creatures:

Florida’s swamp might be inviting, but let’s not forget about the less glamorous aspects. Swamp gas, humidity that could melt a snowman, and yes, the occasional alligator sighting. Plus, Gator fans have been known to be pretty intense—think of it as having a constant, slightly aggressive, overbearing aunt at every family gathering.

2. The Kiffin Curse:

Kiffin has a reputation for being a coaching nomad. What if leaving Ole Miss for Florida is just a pit stop before his next grand adventure? Rebels might not take kindly to their beloved coach swapping out for a more tropical locale.

3. Mississippi’s Charm:

Let’s not forget the charm of Oxford, Mississippi. With its quaint Southern charm, food that could make a grown man weep, and a fan base that’s genuinely passionate about their Rebels. Leaving all that behind could be a tough pill to swallow.

In the end, whether Kiffin will trade the Grove for Gainesville remains anyone’s guess. The speculation is part of the fun—kind of like a never-ending cliffhanger in a soap opera. For now, we’ll just have to keep tuning in to see if Lane Kiffin makes the move, stays put, or decides to star in the next big coaching drama.

Stay tuned, folks. In the SEC, the drama is always just around the corner.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. The time of year when our favorite teams are knee-deep in the season and our betting slips are either overflowing with joy or buried in sorrow. Grab your popcorn, because we’re diving into the noon slate of games with the precision of a quarterback’s spiral and the humor of a tailgate party. Here’s the rundown of our top bets, served with a side of sass.

LSU vs. South Carolina: The Bayou Bengals and the Chicken Dance

The LSU Tigers are rolling into Columbia like they own the place, strutting as seven-point favorites against the South Carolina Gamecocks. ESPN’s College GameDay will be on hand, which means it’s not just a game; it’s a spectacle.

LSU's Offensive Fireworks

When it comes to offense, LSU isn’t just bringing a spark; they’re bringing the whole fireworks show. Garrett Nussmeier, the Tigers’ quarterback, is slinging touchdowns like he’s got a personal vendetta against the end zone. His arm is so strong that it might just break through the screen of your TV. With LSU’s offense ranked sixth nationally, they’re about as subtle as a bull in a china shop—except, of course, a very skilled bull.

South Carolina’s Defensive Jokes

On the flip side, the Gamecocks are more like the punchline of a bad joke. Their defense is all about making you laugh—mostly at their expense. Dylan Stewart, their freshman star, is causing a ruckus, but with South Carolina facing an offense like LSU’s, it’s like bringing a water gun to a flamethrower fight. Their quarterback, LaNorris Sellers, has a QBR so low it could be a floor number.

Game Prediction

LSU is flexing its muscles where South Carolina is still doing warm-up stretches. Expect LSU to cover the spread faster than you can say "Geaux Tigers!"

Pick: LSU -7

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. This game is about as local as it gets—think family feud but with less drama and more touchdowns.

Oklahoma State’s Defensive Drama

Oklahoma State’s defense is like a leaky bucket—it’s impressive how much water it can hold until it starts pouring out. Collin Oliver is out, and the replacement is about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. Their defense has been a rollercoaster, and not the fun kind—more like the “please, make it stop” kind.

Tulsa’s Offensive Surprise

Kirk Francis and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane are charging into this game like they’re late for a very important date. Tulsa’s offense has been like a surprise party—unpredictable and potentially game-changing. They’ve shown they can put up a fight, even if their defensive line is more of a speed bump than a brick wall.

Game Prediction

Oklahoma State’s defense might be ready for a nap, so expect Tulsa to keep this game closer than a pair of old jeans that refuse to let go.

Pick: Tulsa +18.5

North Texas vs. Texas Tech: The High-Scoring Fiesta

When North Texas meets Texas Tech, you can bet on a game that’s faster than a caffeinated squirrel. Both teams are all about speed—think of it as NASCAR meets college football.

Texas Tech’s Defensive Meltdown

Texas Tech’s defense is like Swiss cheese—full of holes and not very protective. They’re allowing more yards than a marathon runner in a 5K. If you’re looking for a defensive strategy, you might find better advice from a toddler with a water balloon.

North Texas’ Offensive Explosion

Chandler Morris and his Mean Green crew are ready to make this game look like a video game. Their offense is geared up to score faster than you can say “Touchdown!” They’ve got a receiving tandem that could probably catch a cold, let alone a football.

Game Prediction

With defenses this porous, expect both teams to rack up points like they’re playing in a pinball machine. Keep your eyes peeled for a scoreboard that’s as busy as a bee on caffeine.

Pick: Over 69.5 (Play to 71)

Alabama vs. Wisconsin: The Crimson Tide vs. The Badger Blues

Finally, the **Alabama Crimson Tide** will face the **Wisconsin Badgers** in a game that’s less about fireworks and more about who can grind out a win. This matchup is like a heavyweight boxing match where Alabama is the reigning champ, and Wisconsin is trying to land a punch.

Alabama’s Defensive Fortress

Alabama’s defense is like a brick wall—solid, imposing, and not really the type you want to mess with. They’re returning a squad that could probably stop a freight train, so Wisconsin’s offense might find themselves hitting a bit of a roadblock.

Wisconsin’s Offensive Missteps

Tyler Van Dyke might be a transfer from Miami, but if you’re expecting fireworks, you might be disappointed. Wisconsin’s offense is like a car with no engine—nice to look at, but not going anywhere fast. Their running game is struggling more than a diet during the holidays.

Game Prediction

With Alabama’s defense as sharp as a tack and Wisconsin’s offense resembling a slightly dull pencil, this game is shaping up to be a low-scoring affair. Expect the under to hit like a perfectly executed tackle.

Pick: Under 49.5

Have fun and good luck!

GAME OF THE NIGHT: #20 And if it's deep ends you're talking about, look no further than Kansas State, as the Wildcats square off against Arizona in a clash that promises to be more thrilling than a roller coaster ride.

Showdown: Arizona vs. Kansas State

Arizona will kick off its Big 12 journey in Week 5 against Utah. But prior to that, they will dive into the nonconference waters with a tilt against Kansas State. The desert Wildcats will be wearing their new "Red Cats" uniforms, which we can only pray make them appear both intimidating and intimidatingly stylish.

The recent contest against Northern Arizona didn't do much to engender confidence in Arizona. A third-down conversion rate that would make a rock seem like a far better option is not exactly what the Wildcats were looking for. Zero-for-ten; they're looking to rebound and show off that high-octane passing game.

Kansas State Recent Scramble

Kansas State was finding Tulane to be a tough cookie, almost the nightmare on Manhattan. Tulane led at the half, and it required a second-half surge of 24 points to barely sneak out the victory. Though Tulane had fireworks in the first half of their play, Kansas State adjusted, tightened up, and kept them at bay.

Head coach Chris Klieman will attack the Arizona defense with a combination of curiosity and a shade of trepidation. The Wildcats have made a living on causing headaches, with Klieman doing some strategic tweaking as he formulates this week's game plan.

Arizona Wildcats: From Boom to Bust

It has been up and down for the Arizona offense since Week 1. The team scored an astonishing 61 points during their season-opening performance, making every drive count. Quarterback Noah Fifita and wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan were virtually unstoppable. Fifita threw for 422 yards and four touchdowns, with McMillan snatching 304 of those yards.

But it lost its luster in game two as the Wildcats won 22-10, but their offensive line really struggled, and they had to sideline quite a few due to injury. Josh Baker, center, was sorely missed.

The defensive side did hold and looked encouraging considering how it performed in the opener. However, once an opponent crosses the 40-yard line, they have tended to yield a score, a tendency Kansas State will no doubt attempt to capitalize on.

Kansas State: Ground and Pound with a Twist

Kansas State has been running the show in the ground game, ensuring that Avery Johnson and DJ Giddens get the yards rolling. Some of the staples of the offense come with their rushing success rates and line yards being among some of the best in the nation. However, they've struggled some on third downs this season, converting just 6 of 20 so far.

On defense, Kansas State is a bit of a mixed bag. They are sure wreaking some havoc, leading in tackles for loss, but their pass defense is really struggling, ranking 128th in Defensive Passing Success Rate. Safeties Jordan Riley, Marques Sigle, and VJ Payne haven't been as tight as they'd like in coverage.

The Big Question: Which team will reign supreme: Arizona or Kansas State?

Friday night's game should be a barnburner. With Kansas State favored by seven, along with the high total of 59.5, there should be plenty of action. Baker's return to form should improve Arizona's line a ton, and Fifita will need to take advantage of a suspect Kansas State secondary.

Both teams have strong points: Arizona's passing attack against the rushing prowess of Kansas State. But the game may turn on whether Arizona's defense holds up or if Kansas State's pass defense rises to the occasion.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. With both teams ranking in the top half of the league in explosive plays, and that Arizona is coming off a bad loss, the over on 59 points would seem like a decent bet. So, get ready for a night of football that promises to be as unpredictable as it is exciting.

Conclusion

This is going to be one of those games, like at all points in time where Arizona faces off against Kansas State, that will etch itself into the lore of the game. Given the high stakes and even higher potential for fireworks, this should be a treat for those coming through the gates. Expect a game full of explosive plays, strategic adjustments, and lots of action from the opening tip.

What's the over/under for the game?

Set at 59.5 points, it would appear this one could be a shootout.

Pac-12’s New Members: The Great Escape from Mountain West

TLDR: Four Schools Leave Mountain West Conference to join the Pac-12. Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, and Fresno State have decided to pack their bags and head for greener pastures, or at least, more televised ones.

The Great Escape

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, these schools will join the Pac-12, which currently consists of Oregon State and Washington State, the last two survivors of the league’s collapse in the summer of 2023. Think of it as the Pac-12’s version of “Survivor,” but with more football and less island.

Mountain West’s Response: “We Will Survive”

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez, channeling her inner Gloria Gaynor, released a statement late Wednesday. “The Mountain West Conference is aware of media reports regarding the potential departure of several of our members, and we will have more to say in the days ahead,” Nevarez said. Translation: “We see you leaving, and we have some choice words coming your way.”

Nevarez continued, “All members will be held to the Conference bylaws and policies should they elect to depart.” In other words, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, but if it does, that’ll be $18 million, please.”

Exit Fees and Poaching Penalties: The Price of Freedom

Leaving the Mountain West isn’t cheap. The departing schools will have to pay an exit fee of roughly $18 million with two years’ notice. If they decide to make a dramatic exit with only one year’s notice, that fee jumps to $36 million. It’s like a really expensive game of “Deal or No Deal.”

But wait, there’s more! The Pac-12, in its infinite wisdom, has agreed to help with these exit fees, thanks to some withheld media-rights distribution fees and other conference assets. It’s like a friend offering to cover your bar tab because they owe you from that time you helped them move.

The Pac-12’s Shopping Spree

Once these four schools are officially on board, the Pac-12 will still need to add two more schools to meet the NCAA minimum requirement. It’s like a shopping spree where you have to buy at least six items to get the discount. The conference is currently in a two-year grace period, which is basically the NCAA’s way of saying, “Take your time, but hurry up.”

The Future of the Pac-12: To Be Continued

News of the four schools joining the Pac-12 was first reported by Yahoo Sports, and it’s safe to say that the sports world is buzzing. Will the Pac-12 rise from the ashes like a phoenix, or will it be more like a game of Jenga, teetering on the edge of collapse? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: college football just got a whole lot more interesting.

Honorable Mention Sports is a reader-supported publication. fintech. After a tough 21-14 loss to California, Thorne’s inbox wasn’t just filled with the usual post-game analysis and motivational quotes. No, it was filled with Venmo requests from disgruntled bettors.

Appearing on “The Next Round,” Thorne shared his bemusement at the situation. “They’re definitely not sending cash,” he said with a chuckle, reflecting on the four interceptions he threw during the game. “It’s funny. When they lose money, they want their money back. But when they win money on a parlay, no one’s ever sent me any of the money.”

Imagine the scene: Thorne, fresh off the field, sweaty and exhausted, checks his phone only to find a slew of Venmo requests. “Hey Payton, you owe me $50 for that pick-six!” or “Bro, you cost me my rent money, pay up!” It’s like a modern-day twist on the old adage, “Don’t shoot the messenger.” In this case, it’s “Don’t Venmo request the quarterback.”

Thanks for reading Honorable Mention Sports! According to a study by Signify, an artificial intelligence company and NCAA partner, 1-in-3 high-profile college athletes receive messages from individuals with a “betting interest.” It’s a brave new world where athletes aren’t just playing for pride and scholarships but also for the financial well-being of anonymous bettors.

In response, states like Maryland, Louisiana, Ohio, and Vermont have banned sportsbooks from offering prop bets on college players. Because nothing says “we care about our athletes” like making sure they don’t get Venmo requests from irate gamblers.

But it’s not just college athletes who are feeling the heat. Professional athletes are also getting their fair share of digital panhandling. PGA golfer Max Homa revealed that bettors have tracked down his Venmo account and requested money from him multiple times per week. “That gets old,” Homa told The Washington Post. One can only imagine the frustration of opening your Venmo app to find a request that reads, “Hey Max, you missed that putt on the 18th. You owe me $100.”

The absurdity of the situation is not lost on Thorne, who seems to be taking it all in stride. After all, it’s not every day that you get to be the star quarterback and an unwilling participant in a financial transaction. Perhaps Thorne should start sending out his own Venmo requests. “Hey, thanks for the support! How about a tip for that 50-yard touchdown pass?”

As the NCAA continues to grapple with the implications of sports betting on college athletics, one thing is clear: the digital age has brought with it a whole new set of challenges. For now, Thorne and his fellow athletes will have to navigate the murky waters of Venmo requests and betting interests with a sense of humor and a thick skin.

So, the next time you place a bet on a college game, remember: if things don’t go your way, maybe just keep your Venmo requests to yourself. After all, these athletes have enough on their plate without having to worry about paying back your lost wagers.
